An interesting sequel to the disappearance of Gustav E. Westerholm, the ice-man recently employed at the J. C. Bull plant, who left Arcata under such strange circumstances about March 1, culminated in his death [of heart disease] at Redding on Thursday, April 22nd.

On that day a telegram was received here, stating that Westerholm had just died, and that he had named Miss Jessie Lima, 15 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Lima, of the Union Hotel, as his beneficiary in the will.

... A holographic will was found in his effects dated December, 1919, and written in Arcata, leaving everything to Miss Lima. Several valuable dogs have recently been poisoned in Arcata, and to date the miscreant is unknown. An Arcata man who loves dogs, conceived the idea of trying to make this unknown person ashamed of himself, and says he will give $5.00 for the best definition of anyone who would stoop so low as to do such a thing.

The article should be written in answer to the question ÒWhat is your opinion of a dog poisoner.Ó The winning answer will be published in the Union, and should be under 100 words, although many more words than that could be written without properly covering the subject. Send in your answers and have a chance at the $5.00.

Front page news: The matter of sewage disposal in and around Arcata challenged the attention of the State Board of Health several months ago and the sanitary engineer came here and spent several days making a survey of the conditions.

The Arcata Chamber of Commerce ... appointed a committee to investigate the sewer conditions. This committee made a careful examination of the premises and found that the sewage discharged from the city sewer into ButcherÕs Slough about 1500 or 1600 feet from the railroad dike, and that at time of high tide the excrement is carried up the slough, some said as far as Sixth Street, and that when the tide goes down, the refuse, if left on the mud bottom of the slough [is] an offense to the nostrils of all to whom the breezes waft the odor.

The committee recommended certain improvements in the sewer, the chief of which required it to be extended beyond the railroad tracks of the N. W. P. into the bay and that a floodgate be constructed to prevent the tide water being carried up the slough. The chief reason was to shut out the excrement. ...
