Middleweight Roland Pierce of Arcata dropped an unpopular decision to Peter Reed of Klamath. Pierce hit Reed hard and often but the Indian boy absorved the punches and after dropping the first two rounds came back to win the last canto and earn the decision of the judges. ...

Front page news: Fires of undetermined origin damaged the Happy Hill Clothing Store and Arcata Union building Monday evening.

The Hill fire broke out in the rear of the building near the furnace room about 9:15 p.m. Damage, including smoke damage to stock on the main floor, is estimated at $6,000.

The fire was first noticed by Armand McCutcheon who ran to the fire engine house ...

After 45 minutes the firemen ... controlled the blaze which swept the underpinning in the back portion of the building. ...

A few minutes after 10 p. m. or shortly after the Hill fire was controlled, a fire broke out in the rear portion of the Arcata Union building.

The fire was noticed by Roy Rylander who noticed a flicker through the window as he drove by. On returning he heard the fire burning ... The firemen shifted battle scenes.

Damage in the Union fire amounted to $150. However, files of the newspaper for the last four years were burned. causing a more serious damage than money could replace. ...

On the front page, accompanied by photo: T-5 Winifred I. Wilcox, in the division of cooks and bakers in the WACS, returned to her post in the middle west last week after visiting here with her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Verne Weltz.

She also visited three other brothers and a sister, Milo Wilcox of Samoa, Silas Wilcox, Arcata, Paul Wilcox, Freshwater and Mrs. James Weltz, Samoa.

while here Miss Wilcox was entertained at several parties. She has been in the service since December 1943 and has since been awarded a good conduct ribbon.

Pfc. Robert Beers of the U. S. Marines is now on duty on the Japanese island of Okinawa where fighting has been exceptionally heavy. However, Pfc. Beers states he is all right and getting along fine.

On the front page: The Arcata FiremenÕs Hall, entertainment and dancing center since the late Õ80s, burned to the ground Monday evening in one of the biggest fires ever to occur in Arcata. Loss was placed at $18,000. The cause is undetermined.

More than 100 firemen and citizens fought the blaze four hours. The conflagration broke out about 7:30 in the evening ... and had gained too much headway for Arcata Volunteer firemen to control. The entire effort was directed in keeping the terrific blaze from jumping across the alley where an entire business section was threatened. ...

It is estimated that two thousand people witnessed the spectacular fire that shot flames about 150 feet into the air. Much excitement was created when the front part of the hall fell into the street while at the height of the flames. ... The fire could be seen from Eureka. ...
