A huge chicken egg, weighing one-half pound, was produced this week by a hen, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Peters of Alliance.

The egg measured 10 inches in circumference, the long way, 7 and one-quarter inches around, or the short way.

It is claimed to be one of the biggest chicken eggs ever produced in this area.

Reports reaching Humboldt daily from Jere Harms, news correspondent and member of the Redwood Area Council Jamboree Scout Troop describe a constantly changing series of adventure for the 31 Humboldt and Del Norte Scouts now participating in the mammoth gathering of 46,000 Boy Scouts of America at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.

First major event was a visit to the Grand Canyon ... after which they sped on toward Chicago. They visited the world famous Adler Planetarium. ...

Front page news: Another step in the growth of North Arcata was announced yesterday by Carl R. Hutchins of the Hutchins’ Grocery who said construction of a new $35,000 store building would start today or early next week at 16th and G streets.

The one-story stucco finish structure will have approximately 4800 square feet and will house 4 store units. ...

There is much speculation among citizens of the north Arcata area as to the kind of business that would locate in the new building. However, a drug store and butcher shop have been mentioned on numerous occasions. A variety store has also been suggested.

It happened just a few minutes after the Arcata volunteer fire department had been called to fight a fire ... A lady, who identified herself as Mrs. D. L. Rash, stepped into the Arcata police department and announced the theft of a red fire truck which had been parked in her neighborhood.

Urged for further details, Mrs. Rash described the stolen engine as a red, modern fire truck attached with pedal power, which had been stolen from her neighbor’s yard. ...

Yes, in the final analysis, the stolen fire truck turned out to be a stolen kiddie car which is propelled by a pair of youngster’s feet.

Front page item: This is a little story which, according to a Sheriff’s deputy, is absolutely true and which accounts for the few persons booked on vagrancy charges in the City of Arcata

... A vagrant would be picked up in Arcata Local police would load him in a car, head south, and let him out at the Eureka City limits. Where he’d be picked up by the Eureka cops.

Wondering why there was such an increase in the number of vagrants being picked up, they asked a few how they happened to be in Eureka, and the “vags” told them the whole story.

The Eurekans, said the deputy, plotted revenge. They found a solution. Holding back until they had a car full of vagrants, they headed north and dumped them at the Arcata city limits. since that time, the “vagrant specials” have ceased their scheduled trips, both to and from Arcata.

This hole, about four inches deep, is becoming one of Arcata’s land marks. Anyone wanting to see if their new tires can meet the maker’s guarantee has but to drive to the 800 block of G Street heading south and pull in by the second parking meter. A motorcyclist, deciding to have an impromptu hill climb last week, was forced to call on a passerby for help after his machine refused to pull out of the hole. Incidentally, this condition has existed for at least a month.
