Large headline at the top of the front page, ÒCAL BARREL CREDIT UNION ISSUE FINALLY CONCLUDED,Ó with story: E. G. Doublet, assistant managing director of the California Credit Union League, this week presented Evelyn Tully, liquidating agent for Local 2808 Credit Union, California Barrel co., a check in the amount of $10,764.67 which will pay investors in the barrel company credit union a dollar on a dollar invested. ...
The credit union story first appeared in a September 1959 issue of the Arcata Union which revealed that when the California Barrel co. credit union was closed by the government, a $75,000 investment figure had shrunk to $36,000 with 75 percent of the loans being delinquent.
Doublet lauded both Mrs. [Helma] Melgren and Mrs. Tully for their hard work in tracing acounts and collecting delinquent loans. The move ended a condition which has existed since the California Barrel co. closed in 1955.

The American Legion claims that the statue, as a representative of our government, is being degraded when Santa Claus costumes and halos are placed on it for decoration purposes during holidays.

Purchase of the three-story Hotel Arcata building by the Norcal Land and Improvement Co. of San Jose was announced this week. ...
The property was purchased from Mrs. C. A. (Lottie) Bartell of Salem, Oregon. Mrs. Bartell and her late husband, C. A. Bartell, bought the hotel in 1945 after leasing it in 1940.
The hotel is now being leased by Al Menke who has held the lease since 1950.
...The hotel at one time had a large kitchen, dining room and cocktail louhge. In recent years this space was developed into private offices, the present justice court and a barber shop.

Spaght, formerly of Bayside, has been named chairman of the board, managing director of the Royal Dutch Petroleum Co., managing director of Shell Petroleum Co., Ltd., and member of the Board of Directors of the Bataafse Petroleum Madischappij N. W., to become head of the Shell OIl worldwide operations.
He has been president of the Shell Oil Co.
Spaght is a graduate of Arcata High school and of Humboldt State College.
